Air Filter Efficiency Classes Explained

Different filter classes indicate the overall particle capture efficiency at specific particle sizes. Here’s a quick card-style reference:

F7–F9 EN 779

Replaced by ISO 16890, but still commonly used in the industry

Typical Efficiency

F7: 80–90% ｜ F8: 90–95% ｜ F9: ≥95%

Reference Particle Size

≈0.4 μm

Commonly used in HVAC secondary/final filtration, commercial buildings, and medical HVAC upgrades.

E10–E12 EN 1822 (EPA)

Overall Efficiency

E10: ≥85% ｜ E11: ≥95% ｜ E12: ≥99.5%

Reference Particle Size

≥0.5 μm (method-dependent)

Typically used as high-efficiency sections or pre-HEPA filters; depending on design, can approach HEPA-level performance.

H13–H14 EN 1822 (HEPA)

Overall Efficiency

H13: ≥99.95% ｜ H14: ≥99.995%

Reference Particle Size

≥0.3 μm (H13 local ≥99.75%)

Used in cleanrooms, critical medical zones, and ultra-high cleanliness environments.

*Note: EN 779 has been replaced by ISO 16890, but F-classes are still widely referenced in purchasing and communication. Actual efficiency varies depending on test method, airflow, and media design.
